This month the Edinburgh Etsy Team is incredibly proud to present our first ever Christmas Etsy Pop Up Shop!
For 3 days only, you’ll be able to pop in to our bricks and mortar shop and check out the most incredible products from 21 of our greatest local makers… It’s going to be the ultimate hot spot for your Christmas shopping this year if you’re looking for some extra special gifts that you can’t get on the high street!
We’ll be open on the 5th, 6th and 7th of December above the Made From Scotland shop at 115 – 117 Rose Street, which is two seconds away from Princes Street and right beside some great lunch & cake spots… Like you need more reasons to come see us! We’ll be there on Friday and Saturday from 10am till 6pm and we’ll be open on Sunday from 12 till 5pm. Perfect!
With heaps of great gift ideas, it’s a brilliant way to Shop Small and support our local artists this year, not to mention that it’s also a great way treat yourself to something unique and magical too! With a collection including handmade jewellery, bespoke accessories and furniture, prints, and bags, there really is something for everybody… And, to make the event even more spectacular, we’re really excited to have pin up parlour Lipstick Lashes and Locks doing quick fix hair and make up for you to make your day even more fabulous!
Excited? Us too!
We’d love to introduce you to a few of the artists and makers involved in the event, so to give you a taster of what’s in store A few members have dropped in to let you know what they make, what their favourite product is and what their favourite thing to do in the city for Christmas is. And remember, even if you can’t attend on the weekend you can find them all online through their Etsy shops, so be sure to take a look at how amazing our local talent is!

I actually love working on a variety of things – from hand painted furniture to original artworks, prints and cheeky little cards. I am a lover of the colourful, the sinister and the absurd and take most of my inspiration from wildlife, nature and anatomy.

What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
My favourite product right now is the painting of a Wompoo Fruit Dove on round canvas – the bird’s facial expression can change to suit a variety of situations  – “Easy there, I’m watching you”, “I approve of your shenanigans”  to “well hello there, gorgeous”….I love products with a bit of attitude 😉

In between getting presents organised for people and stock made up for the shop I actually have a little Christmas tradition in which I take one day to go around all my favourite independent shops to treat myself to a few things. I am a strong believer in that you can never have enough jewellery so, to name a couple, Black Box and Hannah Zakari are always on my treat route.

I make contemporary paper jewellery incorporating resin and metals. My designs are ideal for paper anniversary gifts and one of a kind presents.

What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
I’m very fond of my PEN necklaces because the design is very organic and minimalist, you can dress it up or down, and it goes with anything and everything. I’m sure to receive compliments every time I wear it, which I love because it gives me the opportunity to brag about my designs when I go “I made it” :o)

I design products for the contemporary home. I print my designs on to various surfaces including linen, bone china and silk. They are light, airy and simplistic and I hope they look fresh and optimistic.
What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
My favourite product from my collection is the above ‘Twigs’ Linen Union tea towel, because it reminds me of Spring and new shoots and I like the fresh white linen next to the vibrant green design. Customers like it too because they can buy a matching bone china mug and a Letterpress card with the same design.

I love Edinburgh at Christmas because it’s full of excited and happy looking visitors from all round the world and I enjoy watching them taking photos of our lovely city – makes me feel proud to be a resident.

We make little cocktail hats and accessories from vintage and heritage fabrics – all with a retro twist. Our favourite fabrics are tweed, especially Harris & Donegal; vintage bark cloth and Liberty prints. Everything we make comes from our own patterns and designs and we offer a bespoke service as well as our ready-to-wear hats.

My personal favourite at the moment is the Bunny, a cute little leopard print hat with a big bow which looks like a pair of bunny ears but it changes all the time!

I just love spending time with friends and family at Christmas (cliched but true!) Shopping wise I love the glass animal stall that is always at the German Market! I don’t know why but I just love a blown glass mini creature!

I illustrate and design quirky and playful phone cases, wooden brooches, stationery and prints. I’m really influenced by junk food and retro humour and think it’s important to make trivial products that people happy!
What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
It’s a toss up between my pretzel iPhone cases and donut notebooks . . . I love everything sweet and salty at the moment and these two items are always in my handbag!

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit to the giant Christmas tree in Jenners; it takes up the whole shop and when I was little we used to visit Santa’s Grotto there! Now I’m a bit older, I love popping upstairs to the cafe and get a gingerbread man and a nice cup of tea after an afternoon of shopping – there is the best view of the Christmas Market and the castle from there!

I handcraft jewellery, gifts and accessories made with British supplies.

What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
My favourite product is my happy jars.  These are a favourite for me for so many reasons.  I feel they are my most original and unique product, a great gift and they helped me combat depression!  To use the jars the idea is whenever anything good happens no matter how big or small write it down and put it in your jar.  Whenever you feel a little down read back and remember all of the good times.

I love the Christmas market but also the shows! I haven’t been for such a long time but this year we are off to see the Stick Man at the playhouse! I can’t wait!

My inner child comes out to play when I create – I love to paint in a variety of styles including whimsy and naive. As a child I used to sew clothes for my dolls and it has spilled over into adulthood. I love making cloth art dolls in primitive and quirky styles and sometimes plain daft!

What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
I only ever make one-off pieces, but this one has to be one of my favourites!

Edinburgh has a special allure at Christmas time – a magical city full of lights and festive cheer when buying presents is topmost in everyone’s minds.

At the moment I am in love with my mini embroidery hoop necklaces! I enjoy the whole process..from choosing the fabrics and the design to very last stitch that I make!

These Christmas will be my very first Christmas in Edinburgh and I am so looking forward to it! The atmosphere already feels cristmassy and I can’t wait to see the city at its most!

I make mosaics from recycled materials.  They vary from small home and garden decorative items such as plaques and mirrors, to kitchen and bathroom splash backs on commission.  I also enjoy making visual art pieces for exhibition.
What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
I love the hanging hearts, which have daisies or thistles one side, and usually some text on the other side, such as ‘you make loving fun’. They are suitable for outdoors and make a fun decorative item for the garden.  They also tick all the up cycling boxes as the materials include vintage ceramics, other crockery and recycled tiles then made on a base which originated from a polystyrene box which my weekly fruit came in! The hanging loop is from various random glass & china beads.

I do enjoy the buzz of Edinburgh during Christmas, as I am based in a small town in Perthshire (Crieff), so a trip to the city is one to enjoy.  Both my children work at the Christmas Market on Princes Street, so I must say that is my favourite, as visiting them there is the only time I get to see them at until Christmas Day!  Otherwise, Valvona & Crolla at this time of year is always good.

I design and make stationery and screenprints.
What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
My favourite product from my collection is probably my UK Shipping Areas screenprint. I designed this for my Dad’s house which is in a really remote spot on the Isle of Harris. We listen to the shipping forecast on radio 4 every night when we’re there because we have a wee boat – I love the nostalgia associated with it. The chart hangs on the wall in the kitchen and we’re especially interested in any gale force winds that are forecast in Hebrides, Fair Isle, Faeroes and Bailey!

One of my favourite things to do in Edinburgh at Christmas time is actually something I enjoy doing throughout the whole year! Enjoying a nice glass of wine or beer in a cosy pub, maybe Cloisters because they have a fire, followed by a good film at the Cameo.

I studied furniture design and cabinet making and currently sell a range of handmade home accessories and jewellery, predominantly in wood. My new ‘facetnation’ range is inspired by geometry; an obsession for all things faceted and combines wood with bright pops of colour.
What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
My current favourite product are some limited-edition Ash Serving boards I’m currently making especially for the Edinburgh Etsy Pop Up. They combine the organic shapes of some lovely sustainable Scottish Ash, with some faceted edges and have little hand-made dipping bowls with colourful glazed interiors – perfect for the parties and entertaining!

Edinburgh is such a beautiful city to live in, and I love it at all times of year, but I must admit in these cold times – I do love grabbing a Chilli and Clove hot chocolate from Lovecrumbs on the way to work, it’s a perfect for a pick me up and gives a warm glow! I also love the amount and variety of independent shops we have in the city (I work in Hannah Zakari, Candlemaker Row), it’s great being able to buy unique gifts for people whilst also sustaining local businesses.

I design prints, cards and homeware items such as cushions, coasters and mugs which mix vintage influences with contemporary styles.
What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
Favourite product is probably the 2 matching Heart Prints which feature beautiful passages about Love from Corinthians.  Others seem to agree as it’s one of my best selling products!

As Nov and Dec are my busiest months of the year I don’t get much chance to enjoy the festivities as I’m usually just running between the printers and the Post Office, but the twinkling lights that adorn the trees along Princes St are always a lovely reminder that it’s only a few weeks til my one proper holiday of the year…!

I make gifts from upcycled unloved crockery. I get the crockery from thrift shops and use tile nippers to cut up the pieces then I glue them on to pieces of wood.
What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
I think my favourite product from my collection is my blue bird in flight. I just love him and I think it turned out well. They come to life more when I grout them and you can even see a wee personality!

Ive been away from Edinburgh for 6 years so at this rime of year, with the dark nights im loving all the pretty lights. I think it shows Edinburgh at its best. I love the festive markets with all the food and craft stalls and its a great way to showcase all the talent out there.

I make delicate wire-wrapped jewellery with a bohemian feel, using semi-precious stones, crystals, pearls, and quality vintage components where possible. Hand-wrapped wire is a key detail of every design and becomes decorative as well as functional.
What’s your favourite product from your collection and why?
I really don’t have a single favourite – when I make a new design I often set one piece aside for myself and wear it around nonstop for a few weeks. I pass this off as ‘quality control’, but really it’s just that I can’t resist! However I usually favour delicate, dainty pieces over large statement ones, in my everyday wear.

I love hot chocolate and even though it’s available year-round, I see it as a Christmas treat, so I love to sit in cute cafes amongst Christmas decorations and people watch or do some work. I particularly love the Chocolate Tree in Bruntsfield for its cozy decor and proximity to my flat.
